The Joe R. & Joella F. Utley Collection of Brass Instruments
The Joe R. & Joella F. Utley Collection of more than 600 brass instruments is a splendid assemblage of cornets, trumpets, and related instruments that Joe and Joella collected over several decades. The collection documents the history of high brass instrument-making during the past 400 years in an encyclopedic way.
It includes treasured originals from the heydays of the baroque trumpet made in the Imperial City of Nuremberg by renowned makers such as Johann Wilhelm Haas and Johann Leonhard Ehe. The 19th century is represented with a fine collection of keyed bugles, Civil-war over-the-shoulder cornets, and a comprehensive array of valve designs. Highlights of 20th century trumpet-manufacturing include two trumpets by David Monette, custom-made for Joe Utley in 1985, and a highly ornate Flumpet (a cross between a trumpet and a flugelhorn) specifically designed to celebrate the Utley Collection and decorated by the goldsmith Tami Dean. The collection also includes ethnic instruments, such as African side-blown war trumpets and Tibetan monastic ceremonial trumpets.
In 1999 the Utley Collection was donated to the National Music Museum, The University of South Dakota in Vermillion, where selected examples can be viewed. More information and checklists are available on the NMM website: http://www.usd.edu/smm/UtleyPages/JoeUtley/Utley.html

For the very best response and projection, Shires trumpets are built in a fixed construction rather than the modular style utilized for our trombones. All S. E. Finish options are silverplate, lacquer or raw brass. Above all, Shires trumpets feature the careful assembly and handcrafted methods that the S. E.
